ORIA APPLAUDS U.S. LIFTING OF IRANIAN SANCTIONS
Secaucus, NJ - The Oriental Rug Importers Association (ORIA) congratulates the Administration on its decision to repeal a 13-year-old sanction against carpets, caviar, and pistachios from Iran. Since the imposition of the embargo in 1987, the ORIA has appealed to the U.S. Government to lift the sanction. Persian carpets have traditionally been considered to be the cornerstone of the rug industry.
"We are extremely pleased that the US government has taken this step-a step which will help our members, the American consumer and-most importantly-the Iranian people," stated Nasser Rahmanan, ORIA president. "The recent elections in Iran brought a new, reform-minded government into office. By lifting the ban now, the Clinton Administration is sending an important signal, encouraging the Iranian people to support greater reforms."
"U.S. importers from across the country welcome the return of these beautiful works of art to our country", Rahmanan continued. "The lifting of the sanctions will give the American consumer an opportunity once again to purchase a genuine Persian carpet, 'the jewel in the crown.'"
